Financial Literacy

In an effort to expand housing, credit and budget counseling to a larger base of households in our service area and to implement more intensive financial education services than previously provided, HOPE applied for and was awarded a grant from the Wythe-Bland Community Foundation to employ a full-time financial education and certified housing counselor. The new counselor position will enable HOPE to:

bulletEstablish and maintain a presence in Bland County to expand service provision in that area.

bulletImplement classroom-style financial education training programs to help individuals build financial knowledge, develop financial confidence and use financial services effectively.

bulletImplement a wealth and asset building program to advance households into an Individual Development Account (IDA), a matched savings account that enables low-income households to save toward the purchase of a major asset—most commonly buying their first home, paying for post-secondary education or starting a small business.

bulletImplement a Realty Store program at the local high schools to help students develop budgeting and other financial skills through an abbreviated and controlled “real world” experience.
